The Santa Margarita Water District (SMWD) was established in 1964 as a special district under the Water Code of the State of California. The District’s service area covers approximately 111 square miles with a population of 165,000 residents. SMWD’s service area includes the cities of Rancho Santa Margarita, San Juan Capistrano, portions of the Cities of Mission Viejo, San Clemente and the unincorporated communities of Coto de Caza, Ladera Ranch, Las Flores, Stonecliffe, Wagon Wheel, and Rancho Mission Viejo. SMWD provides potable water services, wastewater services, and recycled water services.
